WALKING IN GLENKINCHIE


There are numerous walks in and around Pentcaitland area and as part of the tour a short/medium walk can be organised.

Winton Estate, East Lothian

Map OS 1:50,000 Landranger 66 "Edinburgh"; 1:25,000 Explorer 351 "Dunbar & North Berwick".

Travel A1 to Tranent, B6355 to Easter Pencaitland; right on A6093; immediately left on lane between playing field and Victorian school. Park in Pencaitland Football Club car park.

Walk directions From car park (448691) return to A6093. Left past Victorian former school (now a recording studio), Winton Arms and village church. Descend past traffic lights, across bridge and up far side to see Mercat cross and old school. Return downhill and turn left off road just before bridge (442690). "Public path to Ormiston" sign points left; don't take this path, but one that bisects the angle between it and the bridge. Cross stream on footbridge; keep to a wide path, with stream on right for 1/4 mile then keep left, slightly uphill (not over stream again) along south shore of Winton House lake ( full of reeds). Climb bank and bear right (red post) along top of wood.

Descend to cross Tyne Water by iron/wood bridge (434694); keep ahead along south bank of Puddle Burn(on right) for about half a mile to point where you see open posts on left (not arrowed). Take left,through posts, along narrow path between two meadows. In .25 mile, right (420693) along Pencaitland Railway Walk disused railway line. Under Puddle Bridge (417697), past Ormiston station site to next bridge (410698) and new community garden site. Left off railway here; turn back across bridge and follow gravel track for .5 mile NW. Where track swings left and makes for Elphinstone, turn right (404705) on straight track for two-thirds of a mile to cross B6371 at Buxley (415709). On along tarmac lane to B6355 (424712). Right for 50 yds, left at "New Winton" sign ("public path" fingerpost) beside New Winton Wood. At end of wood, right between wooden gate (431715). In third of a mile, left (432709 - 4-finger "public path" post) inside top edge of Walk Plantation.

Keep to north edge of wood. In 1/4 mile approx. at red post in a clearing, turn right(muddy path) ; then in 50 yds, left along path in outer fringe of wood. Bear south to path at three-finger "public path" post (443703); right here, to cross B6355 (441699).

Turn immediately left (white arrow); in 70 yds cross track; on along grass path parallel to B6355, to crossroads (446697). Ahead ("Pencaitland, Gifford" sign) along B6355 pavement to A6093 at Pencaitland war memorial (448692). Right; left to car park.

Length of walk 9 miles.
